final design

further development

For my design I will be focusing on the exterior of the building, but as there are a lot of windows, I have also partially modelled the interior. Like the Guggenheim, I have made use of a large open space, so as people walk in the space feels larger. it also allows the large windows to let the light fill the entire room.

At the back of the building I have put an outdoor seating area for the museum's cafeteria. On the left side I decided to make it sheltered, to give the building a more assymetric design

For my final design I put in a arch that goes over the top of the building from one side to the other. It is purely for aesthetics and doesn't serve a function but I think it really helps with the style of the building. The idea came from the wembley arena

further development

My design went on to look like this, but it looks more like a space station that a museum so I went in a different direction.

a final design

Again, this was drawn really quickly. I liked the look of this on paper and i could see what it would look like in my head so I went ahead with this deisgn and started modelling to see how it pans out.

The design i thought worked quite well and definately had potential so I decided to develop this further.

ideas

In order to come out with stronger designs, i thought it would be best to at least make some quick sketches of my ideas. now these are really rough 1-2 min drawings, so sorry if they're not to perspective etc, it was simply to get my ideas quickly on paper.

This was an idea for the sides of the globe, where the windows would be cut out shapes, similar to tetris. Although not sure if this would look okay for the model.

The next sketch is for the front of the globe. With this design, i've gone for a style that uses large metal panels and large window panes, like the fire station i looked at for my research

guggenheim research

one of the reasons for changing my idea from an office to a museum was actually because i was watching a film called 'The International', which has a long scene with the Guggenheim in it. I instantly thought that a museum would be a great idea for the globe to be renovated into.

It was quite easy to gain inspiration from this building, not just because it's an amazing architectual building, but because it too has a curved design similar to the globe.

these are both shots from the film that i print screened. what I like about the building is that the design makes use of large open spaces, which really gives the impression of a larger room.

Like the design museum, the white concrete really makes this building stand out. The spiral like design also has a unique look that you dont see on many buildings.

Another aspect of the building's design that i like is that rather than stairs, it has a massive spiralling ramp, which i think is an amazing design and works well with the open space.

design museum research

the design museum has a style that i like, which i believe could suit the globe if the renovation was done right. Since the globe is round, it will be fairly difficult to use straight edges like this building.

but what i like in particular about the design museum is the use of materials:
the white concrete and glass combination makes the building stand out, and unified white concrete always has a modern look to it, so this is something I will try to do for the globe.

A change of plan

I ended up going through a few designs for the globe by making quick models to see how they would look. Below are a couple more office designs that i tried.

In the end I couldn'd get the look I wanted and I put it down to the reason that I was trying to make it into an office, which simply wasn't working. so instead I thought the globe could be made into a museum, similar to the design museum and the guggenheim.

ok, my poor time management has got the better of me again. i've been working on this here and there but have neglected to update my blog so ill put it all up and explain it in past tense :)

as mentioned previously, I was working with the aim of making the theatre into an office and this is the progress I made modelling wise:
